Description: Describes the life of Wang, a poor Chinese farmer who marries O-Lan, a freed slave from the "Great House" and starts raising a family. Famine hits, and Wang takes his family south to the city in search of work. O-Lan stays with him through hard times and revolution and helps get enough money to return the family to their northern farmlands. By diligence and frugality the two manage to enlarge their property. Both show a devotion to the land, to duty and to survive. Wang becomes prosperous but his passions sway to a younger woman. Her indiscretions with Wang's now grown up son cause a family rift but O-Lan remains steadfast.
