Description: This report documents the results of a digital map requirements study that the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) performed for the Tactical Aircraft Moving Map Capability (TAM MAC) Integrated Program Team (IPT) at NAVAIR (PMA 209) in August 1995. The objective of the study was to establish the map data requirements for a new digital moving map system being built for the F/A-i 8, AV-8B, AH-lW, UH-iN, V-22, and potentially other aircraft. A primary NAVAIR goal in specifying the new system was to enhance situational awareness (SA) and aircrew mission effectiveness, without further burdening pilot task workload. To ensure that the end-users' explicit map needs were considered, NRL investigators elicited one-on-one aircrew evaluations of a wide variety of map data types (both topographic and tactical) and map display parameters, including feature size, orientation, color, symbology, etc., to help define an optimum map design for cockpit displays. NRL presented these map variations as a series of 16 demonstrations (on a Silicon Graphics workstation) to 30 pilots and aircrew at the Naval Air Warfare Center in Pax River, MD.
