Description: The Finca Vigía edition of Ernest Hemingway's short stories collects for the first time the complete mature work of the acknowledged master of the genre in one definitive volume. The first omnibus volume of Hemingway's short stories was published in 1938. Dubbed "The First Forty-nine," it collected the contents of In Our Time, Men Without Women, Winner Take Nothing, the play The Fifth Column, and four additional stories, including the celebrated "The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber" and "The Snows of Kilimanjaro." The omnibus volume was scarcely off press before Hemingway began contemplating a new collection of stories. He set forth his plans in a letter to his editor Maxwell Perkisn at Scribners on February 7, 1939, suggesting several stories for the collection, including "Landscape with Figures," which is published here for the first time. However, other writing projects captured his interest, and his intentions have remained unfulfilled until now. The Complete Short Stories of Ernest Hemingway contains the entire contents of "The First Forty-nine" plus fourteen stories published subsequently in books or magazines and seven never-before-published works of fiction. These include four completed short stories and three extended scenes from unfinished novels that expand our understanding of Hemingway's private and public persona as a celebrated literary figure, war correspondent, and father. Hemingway's three sons, John, Patrick, and Gregory, have written an eloquent foreword recalling their years with Papa at the Finca Vigía ("Lookout Farm") in San Francisco de Paula, where Hemingway lived and worked for much of the last two decades of his life. Charles Scribner, Jr., Hemingway's longtime publisher, contributes a preface that traces the literary life of a man whose love of travel, adventure, and writing became inseparable elements of his incomparable fiction. The Complete Short Stories of Ernest Hemingway will stand as the definitive collection by the man whose craft and vision remain an enduring influence on generations of readers and writers.
