Description: My aim is to provide in small compass what can only be found scattered through a large number of books and periodicals, a summary account, historical and descriptive, which shall be full enough to be useful for reference and information, and at the same time to bring out the true significance of the collections and of the tale of their gathering -- in a word, to be readable. I have confined myself to the Library, that is to the three Departments, of Printed Books, of Manuscripts, and of Oriental Printed Books and Manuscripts. I have left untouched that of Prints and Drawings, once, like that of Coins and Medals, an integral part of the Library, as was usual, and often still so reckoned, regarding it as more closely allied to the Art side of the Departments of Antiquities. --
