Description: This publication provides information on income poverty and social exclusion in the EU, both in individual member states and as a whole, using the most recent data from the European Community Household Panel survey. It presents cross-sectional statistics which explore the association between monetary and non-monetary aspects of poverty and deprivation. Issues discussed include: the conceptual and methodological framework; income distribution and risk of income poverty; the dynamics of income poverty risk; lifestyle deprivation; and the role of social transfers. In 1997, the UK, Austria, Germany, Belgium and Denmark were found to have average income levels above the country average, with Portugal, Greece and Spain the least prosperous of EU member states, and average income levels rising at the fastest rate in the Republic of Ireland.
